There is no Premium Vivarium Wood like our American Chestnut Stumpwood!

FREE SHIPPING ON THIS PIECE!

This premium vivarium wood show piece measures 36″x25″x18″ and should be used in a zoological quality exhibit or very large vivarium. This is definitely one of the coolest pieces we have collected so far. We leave all exterior accents (mosses, lichens, etc.).

As the only people offering this diverse collection of  American Chestnut vivarium wood, we are proud to tell the story and present select pieces for sale. The first hurdle of even finding this nearly extinct wood is virtually impossible. (Please note that we do not harvest or kill live trees, we only salvage antique pieces!)

Here in Western New York, the earliest harvested hardwoods were made into homesteads for our pioneers. The main hardwood through the Northeast Forests at that time, were that of the American Chestnut.  Technology only allowed the sawing of these old growth trees, leaving a stump sticking out of the ground.  It wasn’t until around 1890 that oxen or horse drawn carts pulled these mammoth root clusters out of the ground.  After these roots were freed from the ground, they were arranged in a line to mark the edge of properties and fields.  These fence lines were considered an eyesore at the time, allegedly the origins of the saying, “As ugly as a stump fence.” Something over those hundred years of weathering took the ugly out of these stumps.  We have scouted, salvaged, processed, and prepared for sale a limited supply of American Chestnut vivarium wood pieces. As we go through our cache, we choose unique knots, curves, bends, intersects, and other character pieces cut in common vivarium-friendly sizes. Antique American Chestnut roots have been air-dried outside for over 100 years.
